Internationales TV Jazz Workshop, "Rhythm & Sound"
Vienna 1969
"This
was a workshop on TV that showed how jazz develops at the rehearsal
stage, starting with
the trio, and working up to a larger band. A man would bring a chart,
and we would play it. Then a horn player would be added, then other
horn players, then the entire big band. This was on Austrian national
television! You wouldn't see that today, and you wouldn't see a
network in the U.S. carry something like that. Philly Joe Jones, Slide Hampton,
Dusko Goykovich, Jimmy Woode (the Ellington bassist), and Franco
Ambrosetti were also on that date."

Primo Festival Del Jazz
Pescara, Italy, 1969
"Pescara
was an Italian city on the Adriatic side. This was an international
festival, and I was a member of the Philly Joe Jones group. Playing
with Philly Joe was great, because as you played you got transported
into the Miles Davis feeling. It was a nice rapport, and it was
great having Isla Eckinger on bass, who really dug Paul Chambers.
Jones did not come on as a guy who had to show he was in charge,
he was more about everyone making music. And he was so empathetic.
When you would comp something, he would pick it up immediately.
He showed that on albums with Red Garland, too."
